About Capable Kids

What is Capable Kids

Capable Kids is a family and community-centred pediatric occupational therapy practice based in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories that provides assessment, collaborative goal setting, and treatment in the areas of fine and gross motor skills, visual-perceptual skills, sensory processing, regulation, play, and self-help skills. Children are seen in their natural environments including their homes, early learning centres, schools, and communities. If families are interested, therapy sessions can take place outdoors to gain the therapeutic benefit that the natural environment provides.

Philosophy

I believe that…

  • all children are born capable with unique gifts and strengths.
  • parents are the experts on their children.
  • everyone is doing their best.
  • child-led play is the most powerful means for connection, development, learning, and joy.
  • all behaviour is communication.
  • children deserve respect.
  • the land is the ideal therapeutic environment, providing balance and well-being.
  • as an ally, I must listen to and follow Indigenous voices.

What is occupational Therapy?

An “occupation” is any task that occupies time in your day. Children’s occupations include playing, growing, and learning.
Who I am

Chelsey Weleschuk

MScOT, MScGH, BPE

Chelsey is grateful to reside in the Northwest Territories on the traditional territory of the Dene, Inuvialuit, NWT Cree, and North Slave Metis Nation. Born of Ukrainian and Polish settler heritage, Chelsey was raised in Alberta’s Treaty 6 territory where she graduated with her Masters in Occupational Therapy from the University of Alberta.

After 6 years of supporting children and their families, Chelsey followed her interest in social justice and completed a Masters in Global Health from McMaster University, where she gained a deeper understanding of the health impacts of colonization and oppression.

Chelsey moved to Inuvik, Northwest Territories where she served the Beaufort Delta and Sahtu regions as an occupational therapist for four years. Now based in Yellowknife, Chelsey is the owner of Capable Kids Occupational Therapy Services, supporting children, families, and communities in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.
